Lebanon elections: Initial results show a fractured parliament and bruised egos

Preliminary results in Lebanon's parliamentary elections show some notable breakthroughs for independents at the expense of many heavyweight names and parties - with the right-wing Lebanese Forces party declaring significant gains.

Lebanese voted on Sunday in the first polls since 2018, a period that has seen a terrifying economic collapse, an anti-establishment popular uprising and a the Beirut port blast that killed over 200 people.

Last time around, Hezbollah and its allies won a majority in Lebanon's 128-seat parliament, but there is some indication the bloc will not be able to repeat the trick as votes continue to be counted.

Navy Rescues 19 Pak Sailors Kidnapped By Pirates, Second Op In 2 Days

Indian warship INS Sumitra rescued 19 Pakistani sailors after pirates hijacked their fishing vessel off the east coast of Somalia on Monday. This was the second anti-piracy operation carried out by the warship within 36 hours, the Indian Navy said. Navy Rescues 19 Pak Sailors Iranian-flagged fishing vessel FV Al Naeemi was boarded by 11 armed pirates who took the 19 crew members - all Pakistanis - hostage. The Navy warship intercepted the fishing vessel and coerced the pirates to release the hostages. NEOM project completely falls under Saudi Arabia’s sovereignty, regulations, clarifies official source

  RIYADH: NEOM, a project fully owned by Saudi Public Investment Fund, is “completely under Saudi Arabia’s sovereignty and regulations,” the Saudi Press Agency reported early Monday, citing an official source. The clarification came after NEOM's tourism sector head Andrew McEvoy made comments to media during his participation at Arabian Travel Market in Dubai about demographic status within the megacity, suggesting that residents within NEOM will have a special status, distinguishing them from others. The official source refuted the comment, adding that the NEOM project will operate within “special economic zones subject to the sovereignty and economy of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in terms of security, defense and regulatory aspects.” Economic legislation specific to the project area will be developed to achieve the best concepts of governance of economic zones in the world, making NEOM one of the most important attractions globally, SPA quoted the source as saying.
