"There should be a Pick-Up in demand during the Festival Season Post September-October, by which time we hope that the Covid situation would also be brought slightly under control”, says Rajeev Jhawar Usha Martin

Usha Martin Limited DEMAND ON WIRE ROPE - USHA MARTIN LIMITED: Wire rope manufacturer Usha Martin Ltd (UML) is expecting domestic demand, particularly in construction and auto sectors, to start picking up post monsoon. According to Rajeev Jhawar , Managing Director of Usha Martin, the various measures announced by the Central government to boost the economy are likely to start yielding results post monsoon. “We expect post monsoon things should be better. There should be a pick-up in demand during the festival season post September-October, by which time we hope that the Covid situation would also be brought slightly under control”, Rajeev Jhawar said. While the demand for wire rope has been “fairly decent” in international markets, the domestic demand across various sectors has been very low due to the lockdown in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. But in the previous financial year, demand has started to pick up and the top-line growth of Usha Martin is evidence for this. The r

Doctors, hospitals in Lebanon go on strike

Image
BEIRUT: Dozens of doctors, nurses and medical personnel rallied on Thursday outside the Central Bank in the Lebanese capital of Beirut after declaring a two-day general strike to protest rapidly deteriorating economic conditions. The strike was declared by two medical professionals’ unions — The Syndicates of Doctors in Beirut and the North and the Syndicate of Private Hospital Owners — which say they could no longer put up with Central Bank policies that have allowed banks to impose random capital controls and other restrictions. During the strike, which ends on Friday, only emergency cases and dialysis patients would be admitted to hospitals, the unions said. Lebanon’s medical sector, which up until few years ago was among the best in the Middle East, is on the brink of collapse, barely surviving the country’s unprecedented economic and financial meltdown. The crisis that started in October 2019 has seen the local currency lose more than 90 percent of its value to the dollar, wipin

Canada police shoot man in Toronto seen with rifle near school

Image
MONTREAL : Police in Canada’s largest city Toronto on Thursday fatally shot a man armed with a rifle, local media reported, in an incident that forced several schools into lockdown just two days after a deadly assault on a US primary school. Bystanders alerted police to the man’s presence in an eastern neighborhood of Toronto, and the circumstances of what transpired next were not immediately clear. But city police chief James Ramer told reporters that the suspect, described as a man in his late teens or early 20s, was dead after he had “confronted” responding officers, without elaborating. The police force’s Twitter account said that after officers located the man, a “police firearm” was “discharged.” A spokeswoman for the Special Investigations Unit told the CBC that preliminary evidence showed that two police officers had fired their weapons, and the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. It was not clear if the man was holding the weapon when police shot him. Ramer said he was

Lebanon elections: Initial results show a fractured parliament and bruised egos

Image
Preliminary results in Lebanon's parliamentary elections show some notable breakthroughs for independents at the expense of many heavyweight names and parties - with the right-wing Lebanese Forces party declaring significant gains. Lebanese voted on Sunday in the first polls since 2018, a period that has seen a terrifying economic collapse, an anti-establishment popular uprising and a the Beirut port blast that killed over 200 people. Last time around, Hezbollah and its allies won a majority in Lebanon's 128-seat parliament, but there is some indication the bloc will not be able to repeat the trick as votes continue to be counted.
